Osmoregulation

When bacteria are subject to osmotic changes in the environment, they respond by adapting to the new conditions. We are studying the mechanisms for the bacteria's response upon their experience of an osmotic up-shock, which includes the synthesis and uptake of compatible solutes. Understanding of these response mechanisms is important, and has an applied potential i.e. during a fermentation process where the medium osmolarity can be high.
