What is Biotechnology?

Biotechnology is science and technology which is based on the use of cells or part of cells for the production of knowledge, products and services.

Modern biotechnology includes the use of gene technology and other methods in molecular biology to produce knowledge and useful products for application in research, medicine, agriculture and industry.

The main goal of the research at our department is the application of modern biotechnology methods to the study of both basic questions as well as problems with practical applications. A particularly important activity is to find new applications for our national marine resources, as exemplified by advanced biotechnological applications of alginate from seaweeds/bacteria, chitin/chitosan from crustaceans and fish gelatin. We are also working on isolating new marine microorganisms that can produce medicines and other valuable substances, and we make use of gene technology and modern analytical methods to understand and optimize processes in bacteria.
